Professional Development Seminar: Municipal Options in Opioid Litigation

Events on 4 Apr , 2018

The New Jersey League of Municipalities is hosting a professional development seminar on Municipal Options in Opioid Litigation.  The seminar will take place on April 4, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel located at 700 Hope Road in Tinton Falls.

This seminar will discuss the status of lawsuits presently underway, and litigation techniques and theories especially suited to local government claims. The purpose of this program is to apprise you of all of your options in light of these events beyond those that have already been applied, and to share resources to help you evaluate which option is best for your community under applicable law.

Opioids have led to the first ever national public health crisis under the Public Health Act that does not involve an infectious disease or a natural disaster. As a result, states, counties and cities, as well as businesses, have started suing responsible parties to hold them accountable and recover damages suffered as a result. Government entities have used a number of diverse strategies in bringing opioid litigation thus far, but not all strategies have been employed. Moreover, many of these strategies have ignored the unique concerns of local government and the agencies which service local communities. The unique burdens imposed on local government as a consequence of opioids require equally creative and unique legal strategies.
