As a non-partisan organization that represents the only true regional form of government in the State with a unified and proactive voice, NJAC is dedicated to advancing innovative programs and initiatives that enhance the level of service provided and save valuable taxpayer dollars. Our extensive grassroots advocacy begins with an active Board of Directors and includes: developing substantive position statements, testifying at committee meetings and public hearings; leading timely workshops and strategic planning sessions; managing the press and public relations; and, promoting cutting edge county initiatives.
As you may know, NJAC conducts comprehensive research and analysis on a wide range of county relevant topics including: interest arbitration, Medicaid expansion for pre-adjudicated inmates housed in county jails, pension and heath benefits, the cost associated with the operation and maintenance of the county prosecutor’s offices, property tax cap levy restrictions, local aid allocations under the Transportation Trust Fund; and, much more. Board members meet on a regular basis and we provide bi-monthly updates through “State House News,” an informative E-Newsletter sent to our county officials throughout the State. NJAC also hosts an outstanding celebration of county government each Spring, where county officials share ideas and earn valuable continuing education credits by participating in workshops and informative panel discussions. Our annual conference is also home to the nation’s only county vocational-technical school cook-off challenge.
Additionally, NJAC operates County Nursing Homes of New Jersey, which plays a significant role in advocating for county operated nursing homes as the safety net of care for low income patients with medical conditions that typically prevent their admission to privately owned nursing homes. NJAC also partners with the Rutgers University for Local Government Services to offer the State’s only “County Administrators Certificate Program,” open to all local government employees and elected officials choosing to advance their careers in public service by studying procurement, labor relations, fiscal affairs, and ethics.
This past December, NJAC hosted over 150 county and business leaders from across the State at is Summit on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, where healthcare industry experts discussed county governments’ unique role under the Act as an employer, administrator of human service programs, and manager of county jails. Finally, over the past three years, the NJAC Foundation distributed $101,000.00 in scholarships to hardworking county vocational-technical school graduates who plan to continue their education at a New Jersey county or State college or university. Through the generosity of some of New Jersey’s most prominent businesses, such as Investors Bank, PSEG, Verizon, Wells Fargo, the NJAC Foundation has had the opportunity to provide some much needed financial assistance to an impressive group of hard-working students.
