Atlantic City Electric in partnership with the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management, will hold an Emergency Preparedness Conference Thursday, May 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., to remind residents to prepare for this year’s hurricane season which begins June 1 and runs through the end of November. The free event will be held at the Avalon Community Center located at 3001 Avalon Avenue in Avalon, New Jersey. National Hurricane Preparedness Week 2015 runs May 24 through May 30.
The public is encouraged to attend to learn more about available resources before, during and after a storm and better understand ways to prepare for the pending hurricane season.
Vince Maione, region president, Atlantic City Electric, will provide an overview of how Atlantic City Electric prepares for extreme weather events, offer details on the company’s restoration process and priorities, and discuss ways the company communicates to customers during a storm.
Martin L. Pagliughi, director, Cape May County Office of Emergency Management, will discuss emergency response initiatives including the role of critical support agencies and emergency personnel, evacuation response efforts, emergency shelters, and communications and disaster recovery efforts.
Carol Cohen, executive director, American Red Cross Southern Shore Chapter, will offer information on resources available through the Red Cross and explain how residents can better prepare for hurricane season including knowing the importance of assembling an emergency storm “Go Kit.”
Dr. Shari Silverman, president of the Garden State Animal Resource Team’s (GSART) Executive Board and founder of ReadyPetsGo.com, will provide residents with information on GSART initiatives and available resources to help keep pets safe in the event of a large scale weather event or other disaster.
Attendees will have the opportunity to tour and learn more about emergency response vehicles and how each are critical during a weather event or emergency situation. Vehicles that will be on site include the Borough of Avalon’s Emergency Evacuation Pet Shelter; the Avalon Fire Department’s Ladder Tower 1153; the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management’s Mobile Command Center and the Cape May County Prosecutors Office Mobile Communications Van.
