Everything Elected Officials Should Know About Immigration Law

This seminar will explain what Elected Officials should understand regarding Immigration Law. Mayor Michael Wildes, Esq. of Englewood City will begin the seminar with a general overview of Immigration Law focusing on:
- How people immigrate into the United States, legally and illegally, and how they can fall out of status, as well as the psychology of living in the United States without status.
- Employer I-9 compliance
- A discussion of current topics such as drivers’ licenses for undocumented foreign nationals, the plight of day laborers and their living conditions known as “stacking,” the relationship between “sanctuary cities,” local law enforcement, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
- Fraudulent marriages and how to spot them, and how elected officials should address individuals in such relationships
The seminar will then feature speakers from ICE and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office who will discuss the current Federal and State initiatives regarding the enforcement of Immigration Law. Topics of discussion will be:
- Is Immigration enforcement action tied to local police or housing?
- What areas of interaction does Federal Immigration enforcement action have with local government?
- What are the State’s current immigration initiatives and how do these tie into the Federal and Local Efforts?
